Why is this medication prescribed?

Amiloride is a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill) that prevents the body from absorbing too much salt and keeps the potassium levels from getting too low. It reduces the amount of water and sodium retained by the body.

This medicine is most frequently used in conjunction with other drugs to lower blood pressure, to treat edema (fluid retention) or to treat or prevent hypokalemia (low potassium levels in the blood).
